Introducing Lake Zurich Chiropractor Dr. Mark Gould

Lake Zurich chiropractor, Dr. Mark Gould

I first became interested in Chiropractic after seeking care due to lower back pain I developed while I was a paratrooper in the Army. I remember saying after my first adjustment, "Wow, I think I needed that for about three years!"  The chiropractic treatment effects were almost immediate and I was very excited with the results. I wanted to know WHY the adjustments worked so well.  This led to college level study in the area of health sciences, as well as my own research into natural health-care and chiropractic.

Early in my studies, a book I read entitled: "A Challenging Second Opinion" by John McDougall, M.D. examined some of the major problems with modern medicine’s current orientation and focus on the commercialized use of drugs and surgery as primary treatment approaches instead of first examining alternative means of treatment which were more logical choices based on costs, effective treatment outcomes, and the considerable reduction of side effects.

He acknowledges the failure of organized medicine to work with the body as a whole and to recognize the human body as an intelligent, self-healing entity.  What impressed and agreed with me most was the vitalistic philosophy; that health comes from within, and by the removal of the predominant stress to the body which blocks the internal balance (homeostasis), a person could restore their lost health and vitality without drugs and surgery in many cases. From that point forward, I knew Chiropractic and Natural Health Care was the profession that I wanted to pursue.  I have continued to study natural healing with the same passion as the first day I started.

I entered into the National University of Health Sciences in Lombard, IL. September 1998. I loved learning and although there were times at which the hours of unending study seemed difficult and torturous, it was a touchstone in my life. I worked for two years as a teacher’s assistant in the gross anatomy lab. Teaching others helped me cement my learning of human anatomy. These days, I enjoy teaching my patients about their bodies as related to their conditions, and on better ways to eat, live, and care for their health.  (photo here coming)

My overall goal with a patient is to resolve their health challenges by finding and removing, or modifying, the primary stress (physical, nutritional, or emotional) that may be creating pain, dysfunction, or disease.  I always look at the patient as a whole rather than as a series of isolated symptoms. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

I feel an incredible sense of being fully alive when I have taken a patient who has accepted the years of decline in their health along with all the symptoms and loss of function, as something they are just going to have to live with, and restoring them to an optimal state of health while providing them a new knowledge of how to maintain this natural state of being in a state of balance that was always there, just suppressed.

My wife, Joy, and I have been married for ten years. We have been blessed with a beautiful healthy child, Jamie, who is the love of our life. She was born at home in 2005 with attendance of our doctor, George Elvove M.D.  I helped decrease pain during labor for Joy with laser acupuncture, and also cut the umbilical cord.  People often ask why she was delivered at home or if I was worried about, “what if….”

Joy and I see pregnancy and delivery not as a disease, but a natural process of life.  There are of course times when a hospital is necessary, but both Joy and the baby were very healthy, Dr. Elvove has been performing home births for twenty-five years, and statistically there are much better outcomes with less medical intervention and procedures.

Although we are both busy with the practice and our life, we make good nutrition and exercise an important part of our families’ lifestyle.  When I have time off, I enjoy cycling, outdoor adventures, reading, and fishing.

Dr. Mark Asks some important questions of interest to Lake Zurich residents - Chiropractor Lake Zurich Dr. Mark Asks...

What controls every cell, tissue and organ of your body?
DNA? Wrong. Immune system? Wrong? Hormones? Wrong. It's your nervous system, consisting of your brain, spinal cord and all the nerves of your body. When a chiropractor sees a Lake Zurich patient with say, stomach problems, we want to know why the brain is unable to properly control and regulate the stomach. Which prompts us to examine the nervous system—the focus of chiropractic care.
What's your plan to deal with drug-resistant 'super germs'?
Chiropractors have always been concerned with the indiscriminate use of antibiotics, accelerating the mutation of microbes that make "wonder" drugs increasingly ineffective. My strategy? Do everything possible to bolster my immune system through proper diet, rest, exercise, clean air, pure water and an optimally functioning nervous system with regular chiropractic care.
